Open source by the numbers: licenses, languages and maintenance of GitHub’s top repos
What every GitHub repository with 1,000+ stars tells us. Figures update with each data refresh.
Updated 2026-10-19 · Sealbook
Sealbook tracks every public GitHub repository with at least 1,000 stars. The numbers below are computed live from that dataset, not estimated.
65,712repos with 1,000+ stars
308Mstars in total
43%pushed code in the last 90 days
16%have no license
Which licenses do popular projects use?
Permissive licenses (MIT, Apache, BSD) dominate: they let companies use the code commercially with few conditions. A notable share of popular repos have no license at all, which legally means nobody may reuse the code. Always check before you build on a project.
How many are still maintained?
Stars measure past popularity. A project can have tens of thousands of stars and no commits in years. We label a repo Active if code was pushed in the last 90 days, Slowing within a year, and Stale after that.
